Double Square Gallery is delighted to present the group exhibition, Lineage 2021, which opens on May 1 and run through June 12. The exhibition follows the curatorial theme of the Lineage series and continues the gallery’s long-time attention to abstract painting while extending the curatorial exploration to three-dimensional sculpture. Lineage 2021 features eight artists, including Jenny Chen, Lai Chi-Man, Cynthia Sah, Li Jiin-Shiow, Lin Chun-Ju, Szumin Kuo, Wang Gon-Jer and Chiu Dou. With diverse media of their own choice to explore varying issues, these artists have used textural and formal variations to introduce boundless cosmoses through their respective work.
Upholding a passion for and interest in post-war art, Double Square Gallery curated Lineage – Taiwan Contemporary Abstract Art Exhibition in 2016. Three years later, the gallery continued the curatorial context and used LI Chun-Shan as a starting point to present Lineage II – Li Chun-Shan and Varied Voices. The two group exhibitions featured various abstract art pioneers together with respected modern and contemporary artists whose work has propelled the progress of post-war Taiwanese art. Through the exhibitions, the gallery re-examined the art trends of their time. The works of each featured artist not only embodied the development of his or her own creative journey, but also interwove with other artists’ works to produce trans-temporal, cross-media implications, substantiating the curatorial concept of the exhibition series. Carrying on with the research subject, the gallery launches Lineage 2021, a curatorial effort that not only continues in unearthing the interrelations between different generations of abstract painters and their works, but also widens the scope to include three-dimensional sculptures, enabling two-dimensional and three-dimensional works to engage, blend, convert, resonate and spark off new connections within the finite exhibition space.
Jenny CHEN’s work shows a vibrant style. She draws inspiration from the fluid state in nature, and translates her sensibility into reality with unique brushstrokes. LAI Chi-Man’s work exudes Eastern philosophical thinking and quality. Through his work, the artist explores the world by constructing relationships between volume and space. Cynthia SAH’s work embodies refined and sophisticated contours. Crafting supple forms and textures with unyielding stone, she infuses her work with a tranquil yet fervent spirit. With a humble mind, LIN Chun-Ju lets her brushstroke move freely and embeds her personal faith in the world in the extensive blankness. LI Jiin-Shiow’s work focuses on the relationship between her inner world, her work and the space, revealing delicate yet profound emotions that flow through her brushstrokes characterized by a sense of speed. SzuMin KUO often utilizes simplified geometric forms to incorporate light into her work and delineate distinctive architectural qualities and a sense of space. WANG Gon-Jer undergoes an inner contemplative process of repeated dialectics before visualizing the process with poetic images that draw the spectator into the next dialectic process. CHIU Dou employs the layering and collision of different media to search for interconnections and possibilities with limited colors, expressing varying depth of space.
Lineage 2021 is a trans-dimensional journey. Featuring eight artists, their works initiate a dialogue between diverse creative approaches, which respectively embody their intangible, subtle thoughts, feelings and faith. Their seemingly random, uncertainty-filled abstract creations might appear vastly different, but their works all stem from equally elaborate thinking and arrangement. It is hoped that, amidst the similar or different aura, the audience can discover new lineage in the dialogues between these trans-generational and trans-dimensional works.
