Double Square Gallery is launching a triennial contemporary exhibition program beginning in 2021, which features young contemporary artists and serves as a research basis to study young artists that the gallery seeks to collaborate with in the following future. The first chapter adopts the theme of Younger Than Buddha as the research topic, and presents eight young artists born after 1980, hoping to spark more ideas about the overall environment and imagination of the future through their creative paths and processes.
Double Square Gallery is delighted to present a new group exhibition, entitled Younger Than Buddha, which will run from March 6 to April 17, 2021. The exhibition features eight emerging artists born after 1980, including Sheryl Cheung, Chang Chen-Shen, Huang Chih-Cheng, Li Yi-Fan, Ou Jing-Yun, Lin Chih-An, Huang Li-Ying and Kung Pao-Leng. Each artist has used unique media, ranging from two-dimensional painting, video installation, kinetic installation, as well as concept, performance and project-based art, to engage with the multifaceted contemporary art. The collision of their diversely creative vocabularies unveils the artistic horizon of a new era.
Younger Than Buddha is inspired by Shakyamuni Buddha’s story of attaining enlightenment under a bodhi tree at the age of 35, and adopts the theme of “generational epitomes” to state observations of the new-generation art. With Buddha’s enlightenment as a metaphoric benchmark, the exhibition reflects the featured artists’ exploration of personal life, wisdom and aspirations. Tracing the art practice of the new-generation artists as its curatorial axis, the exhibition invites eight Millennial artists from Taiwan, and showcases a series of works to unveil their creative context to response to the current state of Taiwan’s contemporary art scene and the social milieu of our time.
