Double Square Gallery is delighted to present Spectrum Motion, the first solo exhibition of the Barcelona-based artist duo Lolo & Sosaku in Taiwan, which runs from July 1 to August 12, 2023, and features more than thirty two-dimensional works as well as installations. The artist duo’s practice has consistently explored the possibility of integration with the environs through their creative works, which emphasize on the aesthetics of freedom, fluidity, and variation. In ingenious ways, their works move between sculpture, painting, and installation. In their first exhibition in Taiwan, Lolo & Sosaku focuses on the mesmerizing interactions and interrelations between mechanical operation and color. The machinic components and paint work together to create fluid and highly powerful brushstrokes. Through the expressive potential of machines, their transcending, spiritual essence surpasses the boundary of stillness and brims over from the metallic exterior, formulating a visual language that is passionate and articulate.

The practice of Lolo & Sosaku investigates into sculpture as a possible way to expand a site. Through their work, the artist duo explores connections among objects, the environs, and spectators, boldly looking into the vast creative possibilities. Spectrum Motion is a comprehensive presentation of their Painting Machines project, which comprises painting machines based on various principles of mechanical motions. Incorporated with different instruments and technical ideas, these painting machines construct physicalities that are similar but different from that of the human body through interacting physical characteristics to study the interrelations between color and dynamics. In ways that transcend the thinking that underlies traditional painting, the works of Lolo & Sosaku enable spectators to perceive bodily movements, abstract gestures, patterns of rhythm, and changing forms and shapes, visualizing intoxicating visual compositions and constituting hugely different creations that introduce fresh possibilities.

Lolo & Sosaku is known for their ingenious combination of mechanical aesthetics and vibrant paintings created with vivid colors and lines that interpret the force of motion and speed. Each movement and change reveal the duo’s brilliance and creativity, and awaken spectators’ inner feelings and thoughts through abstract forms visualized as elegant and exalting poetry. The exhibition aims to engage the audience with a brand-new artistic world constructed with the duo’s distinctive visual vocabularies and themes, which immerse the audience in the beauty of motion and power, while challenging existing understanding of conventional art forms. Through vigorous colors, dynamic shapes, and superb techniques, their works are imbued with layers and depth, in which the audience can search for new inspiration and a sense of being moved as they appreciate the idiosyncratic and mesmerizing visual landscape.
