About Chu Teh-I (曲德義)
Chu Teh-I constantly challenges himself with a kidult-like carefree spirit. He always shows unique insights as to how an artist can manipulate colors and aestheticize the conflicts among materials. Chu constantly makes unprecedented, bold attempts at creating a profound sense of color and space through brilliant compositions. Most of his paintings demonstrate the intersection of positive and negative spaces, from which an aesthetically pleasing visual inconsistency emerges. The fusion of colors and the ambiguous area created by superimposed latex, together with the special sanding technique that Chu mastered during his stay in France, create different layers of paint that intersect harmoniously on the two-dimensional plane. Their intersection and mutual-reference give the viewers an inexplicable visceral thrill in terms of vision. Chu takes a further step to explore the spaces beyond the surface of the canvas. The artist’s extensive research into forms and colors, profound knowledge of oriental and occidental cultures, as well as surges of personal experiences collectively result in his fascinating abstract paintings that not only brim with sentimental and innocent colors as well as rigorous and restrained forms, but also transcend the rigid confines of colors and forms time and again.
