Su Hui-Yu participating in the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)
After the video work Super Taboo by Su Hui-Yu was shown in his solo exhibition “A Man After Midnight” in Double Square Gallery and in the “The Possibility of an Island, 2016 Taiwan Biennial” in the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Su was invited by Julian Ross of the International Film Festival Rotterdam to participate in the Film Festival, and the piece Super Taboo was further selected into the Tiger Competition for Short Films, competing in the European Film Award, Short Films Section.
The competition film Super Taboo is a two-channel video installation. The film explores the early years of erotic novels, these are also commonly known as the "small book", inviting actor Jin Shijie to play the role of a white-collar class man, sitting in the mountains reciting the book quietly to himself, gradually leading us into the surreal erotic scene. The film festival will also feature six video works from 2010 to 2016 by Su Hui-Yu. During the festival, Su Hui-Yu will be featured in the Artist Profile Screening "Su Hui Yu: the Midnight Hours" and the after-screening discussion. Only two artists were invited to participate in this special screening, one of which is Su Hui-Yu from Taiwan. The works that will be shown are, Stilnox Home Video: The Midnight Hours, The Upcoming Show, Man Carrying Shame (film festival version), Thou Shalt Not Self-pollute (film festival version), and the two-channel video piece Nue Quan. Focusing on the theme of "Midnight”, which follow issues that Su Hui-Yu has been researching in recent years such as mass media, morality, taboos, body, hallucinations and other related subjects. The after-screening discussions will be discussing video art exhibitions and the experiences of art stepping into the cinemas, their integrations, and differences.
